THE MENU

history

Since 1513

The Il Pennello restaurant was born in Florence in the room where the ancient tavern of the painter Mariotto Albertinelli was located who, as Vasari says in the Lives of excellent painters, sculptors and architects.

«Hating the sophistries and the brain drains of painting, and being often bitten by the tongues of painters, as is continuous custom among them, and maintained by heredity, he resolved to devote himself to a lower, less tiring and more cheerful art; and having opened a beautiful tavern outside the Porta San Gallo and on the Ponte Vecchio al Drago he made a tavern and tavern for many months.»

The inn had Giuliano Bugiardini and Innocenzo da Imola, students of Albertinelli, as customers, as well as Benvenuto Cellini, Michelangelo, Maso Manzuoli, Pontormo and Andrea del Sarto.

Il Pennello

Historical taste…

It is a typical Florentine trattoria, one of the historic ones: whether we consider the last 50 years of opening, or the version that Vasari tells of, of an inn opened 500 years ago by painter Mariotto Albertinelli who decided to pour his manual skill into in the kitchen, and who counted among his clients none other than Michelangelo and Pontormo.

Reviews

Close to Dante’s house, an excellent location for a restaurant offering typical local cuisine. Perhaps not very easy to find without the help of Maps, but still close to the main attractions of the city, see Piazza Duomo, Piazza Signoria, Orsammichele.
Excellent food, including seafood: the sea bass accompanied by roast potatoes was excellent, not to mention the steak which, there is no denying it, cannot fail to be the highlight in this city, and does not disappoint expectations.
The fried calamari, truffle ravioli, spaghetti with clams and desserts are also excellent. I recommend looking for it, activate maps and write Trattoria del Pennello: you won’t regret it!

The food is good and at an excellent quality/price ratio.
We took cuccoli ham and buffalo mozzarella, followed by a portion of pici alla maremmana (ragù, sausage and mushrooms) and one of spaghetti alla carrettiera (garlic, chilli pepper, tomato and parsley) and some excellent sautéed spinach.
Abundant portions, I also point out a notable house wine.
Definitely a nice restaurant, very nice and characteristic inside, with friendly and professional service.
It is definitely worth going there.

Attracted by the beauty of the urban context we booked in this beautiful historic restaurant to taste the real Florentine steak.
We ordered a 1kg Florentine steak and Mugello tortelli with truffle and pecorino cream, accompanied by an excellent Chianti.
The food was excellent, tasty and well prepared.
The service is courteous, attentive, helpful and very nice!
Highly recommended!
